Holiday Hours
The Library will be closed Saturday, December 24th, Sunday December 25th and Monday the 26th. Be sure to stop in Thursday or Friday and stock up for the weekend.
Library Newsletter
The inaugural edition of Literally Speaking, the quarterly Newsletter of the Altamont Free Library has hit the newsstands (well, at least the circulation desk of the Library and a few other neighborhood locations.) A ton of thanks goes to Christine Carpenter for the use of her sharp editorial eyes. Stop by and get your very own copy.
Pre-School Story Hour
Please come in Wednesday at 10 for the only story hour of the week. Older siblings on vacation are cordially invited to attend.
Computer Classes for Adults
The Library is now accepting sign-ups for January’s series of Computer Classes. The first class, The Bare Basics, focuses on turning the thing on, using a mouse and opening and closing programs. Absolutely no experience is required. Call the Library at 861-7239 to reserve a spot.
Kids’ Book Clubs
Sign up now for January’s book clubs. Books will be requested when readers sign up for a club. Our selection for those in grades 2-4 (or fans of Roald Dahl of any age) is Fantastic Mr. Fox. Read about how our hero, Mr. Fox, outsmarts the three meanest farmers ever, Boggis, Bunce and Bean, as he struggles to feed himself and his family. Monday, January 30th at 4 p.m.
Older readers, (grades 4-6), may enjoy Twenty-one Balloons by William Pne du Bois. This fantastical story, winner of the 1948 Newberry Medal, recounts a world of unbelievable wealth, eccentric inhabitants and incredible balloon inventions. Tuesday January 31st at 4 p.m.
Grown-up’s Book Club
Lest those readers who have completed Middle School feel left out, the Altamont Library is launching an adult book club (no, not that kind). January’s selection is White Noise, by Don Delillo. This winner of the National Book Award is a dark comedy about an upper-middle class blended family living in the technology overloaded, mall mad contemporary American Life until catastrophe strikes. Sunday, January 22nd at 7p.m. Request your copy of the book by the end of the year.
R.E.A.D. to a Dog
Jane is back on Tuesday, December 27th from 3:30-4:30 to enjoy stories at the Library. Reading to Jane is a great way for kids to boost their reading confidence and have fun to boot. Sign up for an appointment or just drop in.
