Zinc Monument Tour
On Saturday, October 29, historian Raymond W. Smith, who has done extensive research into the design, manufacture and distribution of Zinc cemetery monuments, popular in the half century prior to the First World War, will lead a slide discussion and cemetery tour among the markers. The program will begin at the Altamont Free Library, at 9:30 a.m. with coffee and pastries followed by a slide talk. Participants will then go to the Fairview Cemetery, a short distance outside of the Village of Altamont to tour the zinc monuments there and learn of their significance. A charge of $10.00 for participants, $8.00 for Friends of the Library will go to the Library Building Fund.
